High resolution SeaWiFS data was used to detect red tide events that occurred in the Ariake Sound, Japan, a small embayment
known as one of the most productive areas in Japan. SeaWiFS chlorophyll data clearly showed that a large red tide event, which
damaged seaweed (Nori) cultures, started early in December 2000 in Isahaya Bay, expanded to the whole sound and persisted
to the end of February 2001. The monthly average of SeaWiFS data from May 1998 to December 2001 indicated that the chlorophyll
peaks appeared twice a year, in early summer and in fall, after the peaks of rain and river discharge. The SeaWiFS data showed
that the red tide event during 2000–2001 winter was part of the fall bloom; however, it started later and continued significantly
longer than other years. Satellite ocean color data is useful to detect the red tide; however the algorithms require improvement
to accurately estimate chlorophyll in highly turbid water and in red tide areas. 相似文献
Myanmar is tenth among the world’s fish-producing countries and third in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). To understand the mechanisms underlying the high production, oceanographic and phytoplankton surveys, including primary productivity measurements based on pulse amplitude modulation fluorometry, were conducted near an active fishing ground near Myeik City. Three surveys, one in each of the representative seasons and covering the characteristic coastal environments, showed well-defined seasonality in primary production and phytoplankton occurrence. End of the dry season was the most productive, with productivity of 2.59 ± 1.56 g C m?2 day?1 and high concentration of chlorophyll a (3.14 ± 2.64 µg L?1). In this season, the phytoplankton population was dominated by high densities of the diatoms Bellerochea horologicalis and Chaetoceros curvisetus, whereas primary productivity was low at the onset of the dry season, 1.36 ± 0.77 g C m?2 day?1. However, this low primary production might be compensated by activation of microbial food chains originating from high dissolved organic carbon. The rainy season exhibited the lowest production, 6.6% of the end of the dry season, due to the extensive discharge of turbid water from the rivers which lowered euphotic layer depth and resulted in an unusually high diffuse attenuation coefficient of 2.30 ± 1.03 m?1. This incident of turbid water may be related to soil erosion from deforestation and mangrove deterioration. This research reveals the seasonal trend in Myanmar’s coastal productivity and its relationship to the tropical monsoon climate as well as emphasizing the importance of tropical coastal environments to the sustainability of the fisheries. 相似文献
Oceanic tholeiite glass has been reacted with natural seawater at 25°–500° C, 1 kbar, with both low (5) and high (50) water/rock mass ratios. Initial experiments were conducted at constant temperatures between 100° C and 500° C (100° intervals) in order to characterize the mineralogy and chemical exchange trends for both water/rock ratios. However, the primary purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical and mineralogical changes that may take place as reacted seawater cools as it traverses a temperature gradient before exiting onto the seafloor, as may happen in some submarine hydrothermal systems. Consequently, a series of cooling or temperature gradient experiments were performed in which seawater that had reacted with basalt at 500° C was cooled to 25° C in a step-wise fashion; mineralogy and fluid chemistry were determined at 100 degree intervals during cooling. For all of the experiments, the elemental exchange trends were the same. With respect to the initial sea-water, Fe, Mn, Ca, Si and H+ increased while Na and Mg decreased. However, the extent of the exchange depended heavily on the temperature and water/rock ratio. During cooling, fluid compositions in the temperature gradient runs generally approached those of the constant temperature experiments. Even though fluid compositions were very similar at 500° C for both water/rock ratios, the high water/rock ratio systems were more efficient in leaching transition metals from the rock and maintained substantial concentrations in solution during cooling, even to temperatures as low as 25° C. The Fe/Mn ratio in the fluid, however, was quite different for the two water/rock ratios; consequently, the effective water/rock ratio appears to be one parameter that can control the Fe/Mn ratio in exiting hydrothermal fluids and may influence the Fe/Mn ratio in metal-rich sediments.Alteration minerals produced in these seawater/ basalt experiments are very similar to those found at submarine springs on the East Pacific Rise, 21° N. Iron sulfides, pyrite and pyrrhotite, precipitated during cooling for both water/rock ratios, demonstrating the ore-forming potential of submarine hydrothermal systems. 相似文献
Zircons in ultra-high-temperature (UHT) metamorphosed paragneisses from Mt. Riiser-Larsen in the Napier Complex, East Antarctica, were dated by using ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and electron microprobe (EMP). Both SHRIMP and EMP analyses yield consistent 2520–2460 Ma age populations for garnet–orthopyroxene-bearing paragneiss and leucosomes enclosed within. The peak UHT event was dated at 2480 Ma by SHRIMP analyses on metamorphic zircons from the garnet–orthopyroxene paragneiss and those on magmatic zircons from the leucosomes which are interpreted to be formed at syn-UHT. As obtained by SHRIMP, the UHT metamorphic event was terminated no later than 2460 Ma. Minor 2520-Ma SHRIMP age suggests either the onset of prograde metamorphism or another high-grade metamorphic event unrelated to the UHT. EMP analyses on metamorphic zircons from sapphirine–quartz and osumilite-bearing magnesian paragneisses give c. 2500–2450 Ma ages. Inherited igneous zircon cores of the magnesian paragneisses yield relatively scattered EMP ages ranging over c. 3000–2650 Ma, suggesting that igneous materials of these ages sourced the protoliths of the paragneisses and that they were deposited during the interval c. 2650–2520 Ma. 相似文献
Cenozoic basin-forming processes in northwestern Kyushu were studied on the basis of geological and geophysical data. Gravity anomaly analysis delineated four sedimentary basins in the study area: Goto-nada, Nishisonogi, Amakusa-nada, and Shimabara. Borehole stratigraphy and reflection seismic interpretation suggest that the Goto-nada Basin was subdivided into the Paleogene and Plio-Pleistocene depocenters (Goto-nada 1 and 2). In the Paleogene, Amakusa-nada Basin was rapidly subsiding together with the Shimabara Basin as part of a large graben. Goto-nada 1 and Nishisonogi basins belonged to another depositional area. After stagnant subsidence stage in the early Miocene, the study area became a site of basaltic activity (since 10 Ma) and vigorous subsidence in the Plio-Pleistocene. Goto-nada 2 Basin is accompanied with numerous east–west active faults, and separated from the Amakusa-nada Basin by a northeast– southwest basement high, Nomo Ridge. Plio-Pleistocene subsidence of the Amakusa-nada Basin is related with low-angle normal faulting on the eastern flank of the Nomo Ridge. Shimabara Basin is a composite volcano-tectonic depression which is studded by east–west faults. Focal mechanism on active faults suggests transtensional stress regime in the study area. 相似文献
Geological evidence of recent tsunamis from sediment samples collected from Lake Tokotan, a coastal lagoon in eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan, was detected using computed tomography (CT) and soft X-ray images, grain size, and radionuclide profiles. Initial field observations revealed that sediments had no discernable sedimentary structures at the top of the core. However, results of CT imaging, soft X-ray, and grain size analyses show evidence for three invisible sand layers that are intercalated with mud layers. These sand layers exhibit trends of landward fining and thinning. Furthermore, the distribution of sand layers was limited to the center and seaward parts of the lake. Vertical profiles of cesium and lead concentrations in combination with recent eyewitness accounts indicated that these sand layers are correlated with the 1973 Nemuro-oki, 1960 Chilean, and 1952 Tokachi-oki tsunami events. The deeper part of the sediment cores includes three volcanic ash layers and three prehistoric coarse sand layers. The prehistoric layers are correlated with unusually large tsunamis that were geologically identified in previous studies from eastern Hokkaido. These findings suggest that nondestructive techniques, in combination with radionuclide analysis, allow for detection of frequent but faint tsunami deposits. This technique allows for an improved understanding of the history of tsunami inundation in Lake Tokotan and of other locations for which stratigraphic evidence for faint tsunamis layers is not readily apparent from field assessments.
Wind-induced circulation and the distribution of hypoxia corresponding to the upwelling of oxygen-depleted water (called “Aoshio”
in Japan and “Sumishio” locally in Omura Bay) in Omura Bay, Japan, was examined field observations and by three-dimensional
modeling. During the calm weather in summer, well-mixed strait water, in rich oxygen at the mouth of the bay intruded into
the middle layer of the bay, southward and northward along the west and east coast, respectively, forming basin-scale cyclonic
circulation. A stagnant water mass was formed below the center of this cyclonic circulation, and it became hypoxic water.
As a result of the prevailing strong southeast (northeast) wind, the bottom hypoxia moved in a southeasterly (northeasterly)
direction. This induces the upwelling of hypoxic water, accompanied by mass mortality of marine organisms. 相似文献
